Is it really possible to safely remove earwax build up at home without damaging ears?
Let’s be real, your ears are not a DIY project. While digging for gold might be tempting, it usually ends in a world of trouble. The safest move is always to call in a pro for a quick and painless microsuction ear wax removal session.
But for that minor, “Is it just me, or is everything a little muffled?” feeling, here’s what you need to know.
The “No-Fly” List: What NOT to Do
✗ Stop the Stabby Stuff.
Just don’t put anything smaller than your elbow in your ear. This means:
- Cotton Swabs: They’re just wax shovels, pushing everything deeper.
- Fingers, Hairpins, Car Keys: I see you. Please, don’t. This is a one-way ticket to a punctured eardrum or a nasty infection.
- Yeah, right, I did remove a tissue from someone’s ear recently and recorded the procedure too (you can watch the full video on Insta by clicking HERE).
✗ Avoid Ear Candling. This involves sticking a hollow, lit candle in your ear. Let that sentence sink in. It doesn’t work and can leave you with burns or candle wax as a new, unwanted ear accessory.
✗ Skip the Gadgets. At-home “ear vacuums” sound cool, but they’re often not well-studied and can be just as dangerous as the pointy stuff. I had once a client whose ear drum looked like a donut and trust me as funny as it looked the pain was from another dimension.
The Safe & Simple “At-Home Spa” for Your Ears
If you’re just dealing with a “little earwax buildup”, you can safely soften the wax so it might clear out on its own.
Your Mission: Soften, Don’t Scoop.
Grab the Goods: Pick up some over-the-counter ear drops, not “a little olive or almond oil” from your kitchen. That’s only because your gut may love unfiltered olive oil but if it’s not a medical grade one you may end up with an ear infection.
Get Sideways: Lie down on your side, problem ear facing the sky.
The Drip Drop: Gently drip 2-3 drops in. Don’t shove the dropper in, just let it fall.
Marinate: Stay put for 5-10 minutes and contemplate life, read your fav book, scroll on TikTok- or not.
Let the oil work its magic. And then, turn on the other side and let it out- unless you want it all over your hair, pillow and clothes.
Wipe & Repeat: Sit up, wipe the outside of your ear with a warm washcloth, and go about your day. Do this a couple of times a day for a few days.
⚠ Important Note: Don’t use drops if you know or think you have a hole in your eardrum or an active infection.
When in doubt, check with a professional first!
So, When Should You Wave the White Flag and Call a Pro?
Call for backup if:
- Your ears feel full, painful, or your hearing is noticeably worse.
- You’re dizzy or have ringing in your ears (tinnitus).
- Your at-home softening efforts didn’t make a difference.
A professional can evict that ear wax build up safely and show you how to keep things clear in the future. Think of it as a quick pit stop for your ears! And, if you’re in Bristol, pay me a visit.
Summary: Be kind to your ears. Soften a little the ear wax at home, but anything else, leave it to the pros. Your eardrums will thank you!
